Background:
A mazoku (translated as "demon" in English release) from another world. Not a lot about his past is known, but he apparently was a soldier and a talented swordsman at one point in his life. He later became the adviser to the king of the Great Demon Kingdom, Shin Makoku. His world is a medieval Germanic world, in which demons have magical abilities based on elements. I believe Gunter's is wind. People often don't take him seriously, which caused his country to become involved in a terrible war. The war eventually gets resolved, and the kingdom lives in relative peace.
When the series starts, a young boy from Earth named Yuuri is flushed down a toilet into Gunter's world, and is retrieved by Conrad, a war hero, and brought to Gunter, who immediately recognizes him as their country's new king. The boy is shocked, but decides to come along. Gunter becomes incredibly fond of Yuuri, though it's not clear whether his feelings for the king are romantic or platonic. Regardless, he is very affectionate towards the king.
Gunter's best friend, Gwendal, is the one that Gunter really seems to spend the most time with. When ever Gunter has a problem or wants someone to talk to, he turns to the grumpy general of the army. Though Gwendal acts as though Gunter annoys him, he does care for the adviser. Perhaps they're more than just friends? Perhaps not, but I like to think so, and there is a fair amount pointing towards the possibility. At one point, Gunter got a cursed crown stuck on his head that wouldn't let him get near King Yuuri. Gwendal had to kiss the crown attached to him in order to break the curse. Both were blushing at some point during the scene, and that is likely a fond memory for Gunter.
The person that causes the most trouble for Gunter is a woman named Anissina. She is a crazy inventor and frequently wants Gunter (and Gwendal) to test her latest inventions. They hardly ever turn out to be useful, and sap a great deal of Gunter's energy during the testings. Gunter also frequently has to keep Wolfram's temper in check, as well as Cheri's antics, though sometimes Gunter can be just as bad as Cheri; he once fought her for Yuuri's clothes.
Gunter proved his fighting ability during a rough period of time for the kingdom. Conrad betrayed his kingdom (though it was later found to be a spy mission), which hurt Yuuri horribly. This angered Gunter, and while he was with the others on a different mission for his kingdom, he found that Conrad was in the same town. Enraged at what Conrad's betrayal had done to Yuuri, Gunter sought out Conrad for a fight with the help of Yozak, a Demon Kingdom spy and Conrad's best friend. Conrad was over-confident in his own abilities, telling Gunter to back down as there was no way he could win, but as the fight progressed, Gunter didn't even break a sweat, and an exhausted Conrad had to run for his life. Conrad was considered the greatest swordsman in the Kingdom, but Gunter was able to easily defeat him (though Conrad may have been holding back, I doubt it was much; I'm sure he could tell Gunter was out to kill).
